Responsibilities of the artist

Gallery Sitting
  • Artists share the sitting duties equally. The average number of days will be determined by the number of artists participating and the number of days per week the gallery is open. For example, if the gallery is open Wed to Sun, the sitting requirement would be 2 to 3 days/month.

  • The schedule is set up monthly, in advance. Every effort is made to accommodate the artist’s specific requests.

  • If an artist is unable to sit, it is their responsibility to make alternate arrangements such as switching days with another artist or arranging (with sufficient notice) to hire our gallery attendant (when the gallery has one).

  • Artists are expected to be familiar with the artists and the works in the gallery and actively promote sales of work.

  • Training will be provided. An operations manual will be available at all times.

  • The gallery will be closed during the winter from Christmas to April 1st.

Gallery Management
  • Each artist is responsible for their share of the expenses of running the gallery ($2,538.60/artist/year in 2025) based on 11 artists. Maximum number of wall artists to be 12. Maximum number of floor artists to be 2.

  • Each artist must attend at least 75% of the regular gallery meetings (including the AGM and any special meetings) and vote on gallery matters.

  • The annual general meeting will take place in early January every year.

  • Fiscal year will run from March 1st to February 28th.

  • Artists are expected to participate on gallery committees: e.g. exhibition planning, installation, marketing & promotion etc.

  • Artists should be engaged with gallery functions and support openings and other gallery events whenever possible.

  • Any artist who does not wish to renew their commitment to the gallery for the next year must advise the co-operative in writing by November 15th.

  • The deadline for submissions for new members will be December 10th every year.

  • Individual orientation to the gallery policies and procedures will be provided.

  • The gallery has business/liability insurance and officers insurance but no insurance for the artwork.

  • All artists must sign a waiver saying that they are displaying their art in the gallery at their own risk.

  • Any artist organizing or hosting an event/workshop must provide proof that they are covered by their own business/liability insurance or, obtain event insurance for the specific event and provide proof of that prior to the event.

  • If an artist charges HST, it must be included in the price of their artwork.

  • A special project or an unexpected expense within a year may be funded, with approval from the membership, by additional member contributions.
